Next meeting is 7 p.m.
April 3, 2008
at Wyoming Game and Fish

Our annual banquet has come and gone. It kind of amazes me to watch this thing unfold each year, with a minimum of volunteers and a fair amount of confusion, but it ends up as quite the success. This is our main source of funds that allows us to do what we do. This year we made approximately $26,500, a record, and picked up another 60 members. Nice job gang.

Inside is a list of our supporters that make our banquet possible. I would like to thank them once again for their help and donations. If you get the chance, say thanks when you visit their businesses.

At our April meeting we will have Al Condor of the Wyoming Game and Fish stop by and give us an update on last years lake surveys and report of the health of our local fisheries. It is always in interesting presentation.

Some of the club members are trying to make our meetings more informational. We really would like some input on what information we as a club should present. We are considering paying members with considerable experience to come and share their knowledge with those of us who are less experienced. We could do a much better job of teaching the how to's of walleye fishing on our local waters.

It is membership renewal time. We always lose a few members this time of year because they let their membership lax. Don't be on the member drop list I get at the end of this month. Member- ship forms are available on our website.

I had a talk with Jack Moore of the Casper Fire/EMS Dept of Casper. He is the co-ordinator of the life jacket loan program. He said he received a donation of life jackets from a local financial institution and currently has an adequate number of life jackets on hand. He did state that the number of life jackets loaned out grows dramatically each year and was unsure if he could meet the needs as summer progresses. I told him we would vote on a contingency emergency fund at our next meeting to cover any potential shortfalls. By approving this fund we would be ready to supply life jackets quickly should the need arrive. The North Platte Walleyes Club has been the primary sponsor of this life saving effort and I think we should continue our efforts with this program.

Our toughman tournament is coming up on the 10th of May. Being that late in the year I don't know how tough it will be. Maybe some of our fair weather fisherpersons might try their luck. If you need an entry form call one of the club officers listed here. This year we will have some cash door prizes along with other awards. This is not a club fund raiser but is primarily a membership drive so with any luck at all we should have a 100% total payback of entry fees. We have made money in recent years and

Calendar of events

CHEYENNE - Mark your calendars for the 2008 Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo. Some scheduling changes to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's annual outdoor event should bring more participants than ever before. The 2008 Expo will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 through Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

The kids fishing day is coming up May 10th. We almost have enough volunteers to work that event. We plan to give away hundreds of fishing outfits consisting of rod, reels, line and small tackle kits. We are working on other things we will be giving away but nothing has been finalized as yet. Let us know if you would like to help put this event on. Should be fun.

Fishing reports, tips and tricks

Glendo has been open for most of the month. Many are reporting good catches from Bennett to Whiskey on both sides of the lake. Jigs and minnows seems to be the preferred bait shallow (20' up to the shoreline) and spoons vertical deeper out to 40' although one reporter said plastics worked best for him. I'm going to wait till the fishing stops before I head out, I don't want to deviate from previous practices.

Alcova should be open very soon if not already. Last I heard was the ice was very thin and dangerous. With the high temps and winds lately it won't last long.

Boysen is open from Muddy to the dam with little reporting on the fishing.

On the lighter side

At the airport

During the final days at Denver's old Stapleton airport, a crowded United flight was canceled. A single agent was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, "I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be FIRST CLASS."

The agent replied, "I'm sorry sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these folks first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out." The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, "Do you have any idea who I am?"

Without hesitating, the gate agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone. "May I have your attention please?" she began, her voice bellowing throughout the terminal. "We have a passenger here at the gate WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to the gate."

With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the United agent, gritted his teeth and swore "(Expletive) you." Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to stand in line for that, too."

The man retreated as the people in the terminal applauded loudly. Although the flight was canceled and people were late, they were no longer angry at United.

Science project

A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."

And for plenty of good reasons, since:

- it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting

- it is a major component in acid rain

- it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state

- inhalation can kill you

- it contributes to erosion

- decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes

- it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical. Forty-three (43) said yes, six (6) were undecided, and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water. The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"
