at Wyoming Game and Fish
Toughman time is here. There was a little misprint last month, blame it on senility. The tough-man tournament is this Saturday, May 3rd. You entry needs to be in by Wed. April 30 or there is a $10 late fee. You must be a member of North Platte Walleyes Unlimited to enter. The reason for the membership requirement is this is a membership drive and not a fund raiser. We will try to return all entry fees back as door prizes.
This is also the time for all membership dues to be paid. Support our little organization and continue to receive this semi-informative newsletter. We are close to reaching the magical 250 members level.
At last months meeting we drew Larry Meebore as our winning loser. We draw each month from the entire membership and if that member is present they receive a $100 gift certificate from Sportsman Warehouse which increases each month by $10. The prize is now $150.
Last fall our club was informed of some Wyoming Game and Fish matching grant money that was available to community organizations. We applied for two projects, one being $5000 for kids fishing poles that we would match and the other was for a 90 foot dock for Boysen Reservoir to replace the short dock there. This dock had a multi-faceted funding program where our end would be about $5000. We haven't been notified if this project has been approved but should hear soon.
We did receive an approval for the $5000 kids fishing poles. We have a bit of paperwork to do and return and the check should be cut by June. I have been in contact with Shakespeare in regards to a potential $10,000 order and they are as excited as I am. I will be getting samples of our options of which pole systems to order coming asap and we can decide which kids poles to purchase. These will be given away by us at the Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo held at the Casper Event Center this coming September 11-13. For those keeping track, this will elevate our donor level this year to Platinum, the highest level. Of course we will be needing volunteers to man the booth for the three day show.
Wyoming Game and Fish regional fisheries supervisor Al Conder with Matt Hahn and Paul Gerrity, regional fisheries biologists came to our last meeting with reports on the health of our regional reservoirs. Seems the walleyes are doing well in the North Platte River system with Alcova Reservoir showing the most improvement and growth.
Al also mentioned a disturbing discovery of Zebra Mussels in Lake Pueblo in Colorado. They are a non-native, invasive species that spread very quickly, having harmful effects on the environment. Zebra mussels attach to hard surfaces and are known to clog intakes and engines on boats, as well as pipes and water transport structures. Zebra and Quagga Mussels are no small threat to our fisheries. Go take a look at what you can do to help prevent the spread of this non-native species.
Also at our last meeting we voted to allocate $1000 to be used if needed to purchase life jackets for the Casper Fire/EMS dept for their life jacket loaner program. They have plenty of life jackets available for the moment but the program grows rapidly each year and we want to be prepared if there is a need for more life jackets.
One last bit of business was the approval of money to purchase embroidered red vests to be worn by volunteers at the Harry Yesness Kids Fishing Derby, our annual banquets, and other functions manned by NPWU members. These should arrive in time to be displayed at our May monthly meeting.
Our fishing poles to be given away at the Harry Yesness Derby are here, all 880 lbs of them. It makes quite a pile. John Green, our resident kids fishing pole tester, tested one of them and was able to bounce a bobber of the wifes car 60 ft away with ease. We have purchased a small amount of tackle to be distributed among our volunteers and are ready to go. Should be a fun time.
Wyoming Discount Sports donated 200 cameras to be given away and Walgreen's donated the film to be put in them.
Here is a part of the press release given by the Casper Recreation Department: The Casper Recreation Division will be hosting the 13th Annual Kids Fishing Derby, Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm at Yesness Pond located at 4100 SW Wyoming Boulevard. This free event is for kids ages 14 and under, accompanied by their parents. Due to the popularity of this event and limited space, families with last names beginning with the letter A through M fish from 8 to 11 am and families with last names beginning with the letter N through Z fish from 12 to 3 pm. Registration begins at event start time. There will be goody bags for all fishing participants - no one leaves empty-handed!

A recent survey by the American Sportfishing Association ranks Wyoming as the top state in the lower 48 for having the highest number of residents who fish based on the percentage of population. Only Alaska ranked higher. The survey included residents 16 and older. For those with high speed internet service the Wyoming Game and fish now have a weekly tv show on the internet. It can be found on the bottom of the page at http://www.myoutdoortv.com/. Lots of fishing and hunting shows from other states available also.
Fishing reports, tips and tricks
Alcova has been fishing hot lately. Reports of 15 to 20 fish days have come in. Jig and minnow is the hot bait. Club member John Green caught a 14+ lb walleye two weeks ago and fishing partner that day Chad Alvar boated a 10+ that same day. Photos are on our website.
Glendo has been slow and is post spawn. Should be picking up soon.
Boysen is reported as slow.

Snow Pack levels on the Upper North Platte River System is currently at 111% of normal for the year to date. Last year at this time we were at 74% of normal.

On the lighter side
Where did it go?
Arthur is 80 years old. He's fished almost every day since his retirement 20 years ago. One day he arrived home looking downcast. "That's it", he told his wife, "I'm giving up fishing. My eyesight has gotten so bad that when I cast I couldn't see where the lure went."
His wife sympathized and made him a cup of tea. As they sat down she said, "Why don't you take my brother with you and give it one more try."
"That's no good," sighed Arthur, "Your brother's ninety. He can't help" "He may be ninety," said the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect."
So the next day Arthur headed off to the lake with his brother-in-law. He got up to the bow of the boat, made a mighty cast, squinted down the lake, then turned to his brother-in-law. "Did you see where my lure went?"
"Of course I did!" "Where did it go?" asked Arthur. "I can't remember."
Going deaf
Guy calls the doctor and says, "I need to make an appt. for my wife; I think she is going deaf".
Doc. says "I am booked solid for the next 2 weeks and cannot possibly see her; but, you can perform a test to get an idea how deaf she is.
Get approx. 40 ft. away from her and ask her a simple question--if no response, do the same thing at 30 ft, 20 ft., etc."
Guy says,"Ok doc, thx"
That nite the guy was sitting in the living room and his wife was in the kitchen fixin dinner. He thought, I'm about 40 ft away from her,I'll try the 'test'.
So, he calls out "Honey, what's for dinner?" --no response.
He gets up and goes to the doorway of the dining room (about 30 ft)-"Honey, what's for dinner?"-no response
He tries at the doorway to the kitchen -20 ft--no response.
Tries from the middle of the kitchen-10 ft--no response.
Finally he gets right behind her and says, a little louder, "HONEY, what's for dinner?"
She whirls around and screams--"For the 5th time-CHICKEN!!"
