![]() North Platte WU Newsletter Editor at Wyoming Game and Fish Another year under our belts. Our December meeting had a great turnout, showing what happens when you mention free food and a chance to win a cupla bucks. I had ordered 50 chairs and we had half that many folks standing. Lacinda and Howard Tilton with the help of Lotus Harrington and some other members made sure we had enough to eat. And thank you White's Marine for hosting us. Our usual meeting end raffle was instead a gift give-a-way with a large portion of the attendees receiving something. Every person who attended was given a ticket and we had a drawing to pick a winner for a $100 gift certificate to Sportsman's Warehouse. The winner was Jack Moore of the Casper Fire/EMS Department who attended to give us a year end rundown on the life jacket program. We also had a drawing from our entire membership for another $100 gift certificate but alas, TY and Lindsey Svejkovsky was not in attendence and became our December winning losers. Club president Billy Brenton showed a preview segment of his upcoming TV series. I have a complete anouncement of this series inside. We did a bit of business at the December meeting and it was suggested, seconded and passed that we donate $1000 to the Salvation Army to help them brighten the holiday season for their constituents. I had suggested that we sink some christmas trees at Pathfinder Reservoir and it was met with some positive attitudes. Further investigations showed up some flaws with that plan on two different fronts. When I first suggested the plan to a leading Game and Fish Supervisor it was met with a rather bland attitude in that it probably would not be of any benefit but would do no harm. A different discussion with a mid-level game and fish employee pointed out that the fish species in Pathfinder do not relate all that much with vegetation, that mostly perch and crappies take advantage of weeds and brush, neither of which are in Pathfinder. Pathfinder forage fish consist mostly of spottail and Emerald shinners, while the game fish species are Walleye and to a lesser extent Trout. During that discussion. I also asked about a rumor I had heard about game and fish wanting to drain and poison Pathfinder. I could not get a straight answer but was instead told how the entire fishery would be devastated if the lake was to reach 17% of full pool. Keep in mind that Pathfinder is currently at 23% of full pool and we will have to ship extra water out of state to Nebraska for habitat enhancement. I pointed out that the walleyes could survive the warm water created by low pool if given something to eat, but was met with non-commital pass the buck answers. I definitely got the impression that Game and Fish wants to poison that Reservoir. I like Pathfinder Reservoir as it costs a lot less money to get skunked there compared to going to Glendo or Boysen. I think that it would be safe to imagine that Game and Fish would restock with trout and trout only. I will check on this rumor some more as see if I can get a more direct yes or no answer to this situation. For those with internet access, I suggest you give a visit to the Wyoming Game and Fish website, especially to the Casper district angler newsletters. Because of frequent personnel changes they were unable to generate a 2005 newsletter until late late year. At the same time they put out the 2006 angler newsletter which has a decidedly walleye slant. It highly informative and does give some insight as to the problems of maintaining walleye and trout fisheries and various attempts to address those problems. It is a good read and well worth a look. The website is: http://gf.state.wy.us/fish/fishing/newsletters/ I thought it might be interesting if I put in a list of our clubs contributions to the community over the last year. Our biggest expenditure was $3419 for a courtesy dock for Glendo Reservoir. We donated $2800 to the Wyoming Game and Fish dept to buy equipment to help them do a crappy habitat enhancement project at Boysen Reservoir. We spent $2000 to buy fishing poles, reels, line and tackle boxes that we gave away to the kids at our banquet last spring. We donated $1500 worth of life jackets to the Casper Fire/EMS Department for their life jacket loaner program. We assisted the Salvation Army's Christmas needs with a $1000 cash donation. We gave $500 to the Wyoming Heritage Expo and last but not least, we finally gave away a $100 gift certificate we purchased from Sportsman's Warehouse. Fishing reports, tips and tricks As of Jan 1, I received a report of a foot of ice in the Fremont Bay area of Boysen Reservoir. Jig and minnow and Swedish pimple were working although fishing was reported slow. It was mentioned fishing might be better further south. His fame grew and soon people from all over the country were coming to him in Minnesota for paintings. One day, a beautiful young woman pulled up to his house in a stretch limo. She asked Ole if he would paint her in the nude. This was the first time anyone had made this request. The beautiful lady said money was no object; she was willing to pay $5,000. Not wanting to get into trouble with his wife, Ole asked the lady to wait while he went in the house and conferred with Lena, his missus. In a few minutes he returned and said to the lady, "Ya, shoor, you betcha. I'll paint ya in da nude, but I'll haff 'ta leave my socks on so I'll have a place to wipe my brushes." wyowalleyenewsletter@hotmail.com Tight Lines -- Woody G. |
