Meeting is 7 p.m., July 9,
at Wyoming Game and Fish in Casper

Our meetings are the first Thursday
of the month

Our July meeting will be on the second Thursday of the month because of the 4th of July holiday. We have had two winners of our "Lucky Loser" in as many months. At each meeting we draw from our entire membership and if that member is in attendance they win a $100 gift certificate from Sportsman's Warehouse. The June winner was Jay Zastrow.

Our club family outing at Glendo enjoyed great weather and fine fishing. The food was great as usual. Buddy Dunn, Joel Shinmori, Larry Rue cleaned the fish and Howard and Nina Ewart with Roy Herrington prepared and cooked the fish and onion rings to perfection. Big fish plaque was won by one of our newest members, Tim Gall of Gillete. Brian Woodward brought some items that were donated by Casper Business's which were awarded by drawings

We will be having another family outing this month at Pathfinder reservoir marina shelter. All are invited and you do not have to be a member to attend. Bring a covered dish if you can and eating utinsels and the club will provide the soft drinks, cooking oil and onion rings. We have some more donated items for another drawing at this months outing.

Our big event for June was the Kids Fishing Day held at Harry Yessness Park that is presented by the Casper Parks Department and the Wyoming Game and Fish. The weather was warm but the wind blew hard for most of the day.

The Wyoming Game and Fish had a registration table and recorded 420 kids attending. It is suspected that perhaps 20 to 30 kids didn't register which would put the total number close to 450 kids which is a record turnout. We handed out fishing poles and tackle kits to all to wanted one. We had about 10 to 15 club members preparing and handing out poles and were kept busy for most of the day. Pictures are on our web site.

Schwan's was on site and handed out ice cream cones and bars to over 500 kids and family members (club members and officials also tested the ice cream for quality control). NPWU split the cost of the ice cream, and our cost was $141.

Because of the wind many of the kids were catching the russian olive trees that are scattered around the Harry Yesness pond. I had a discussion with City Parks Director Dave Hoff about the possibility of a NPWU club project of cutting down and removing the russian olive trees. Dave said it would be a good idea so we will be discussing this possibility at our next meeting.

Dave Hoff attended the kids fishing day and with Game and Fish supervisor Al Condor and myself examined the south end of Harry Yesness pond to see what could be done to cleanup and make more user friendly that part of the pond. I had a talk with a local heavy construction firm which said they were willing to come on board to make it happen. More as it develops.

Glendo is fishing well. Most techniques are working.

Pathfinder: Try trolling in 12 feet of water with cranks.

Last time out to Glendo I caught three. Triple last years total production. Try cranks over the weeds in Airport and Muddy. I was told of a secret spot in Pathfinder to try. Stay tuned, this could be a banner year.

FYI Our website, www.npwalleyes.com was rated #44 of all walleye sites last month. This month it is rated 43. Keep checking it, maybe we can get below 40 next month. Our newsletter archives have some almost worthy articles and information.

For those with internet access there is a piece on the Casper Star Tribune web site regarding this years kids fishing day. It includes a text article and video. The link is Kids Fishing Day Article.

The Hunter Lewis Fittje memorial kids fishing derby will be held July 18th at Harry Yesness Pond from 9 to 11 am which will benefit the Hunter Fittje Scholarship Fund. This event would give the NPWU club a chance to give out more fishing poles to area kids. This is also the date for our family outing at Pathfinder. We will discuss our options at this months meeting. We have 150 to 200 poles that are not allocated for this year.

Results of NPWU members efforts in area tournaments:

Wyoming Walleye Circuit - June 9th - Keyhole Reservoir
1st Frank Schreckengost and friend
2nd Cody Carpenter and Rick Carpenter
8th Bruce Brugger and Rick Walter
11th Mike and Deidra Homann

Last month I stated that Brandon and John Green finished 11th in the Wyoming Walleye Stampede held May 30-31. I was wrong. John and Brandon tied for 10th which made them ten and a half which is much better. My mistake.

Make your batter matter…

Good fish batter recipes are the key to a successful fish-fry. We have some very easy recipes that will really add some zing to your fish. These batters are especially good with walleye and pike. They can be used for trout as well.

Pepper Lime Batter

This one is a beauty. Lime seems to go with almost everything. Putting them into fish batter just makes sense. This is a quick and easy batter to put together. If you are a lime fan - give it a whirl! It makes enough for about 2 pounds of fillets.

Juice of 3 Limes, squeezed
1 Cup flour
1 Tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
2 Egg whites
3/4 Cup water
Pepper to taste (don't be afraid to add a little kick)

Mix the ingredients well in a bowl ensuring all the lumps have been removed. Pat fish dry before dipping in the batter. Fry until golden brown. Serve with tartar sauce or lemon wedges.

Deep Frying Delight

If you like deep fried fish, this fish batter recipe is for you. It is enough for about two pounds of fillets.

1 Cup flour
1 Tsp baking powder
1/2 Cup cornstarch
3/4 Cup water
1/4 Cup light beer
1 Tsp salt
1 Tsp of pepper
1 Tsp brown sugar
1 Tsp oil

Mix all of the ingredients together. Make sure you have eliminated the any lumps in your batter. Make sure the fish pieces are dry before you dip them into the batter. This can be done with a paper towel. Place the fish in the hot oil one piece at a time. Cook until the batter has turned golden brown. Remove the fish and place the pieces on towel to drain. Serve at once. Serve with lemon wedges and tartar sauce.

On the lighter side

Shotgun wedding

A couple goes out to dinner to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. On the way home, she notices a tear in his eye and asks if he's getting sentimental because they're celebrating 50 wonderful years together. He replies, "No, I was thinking about the time before we got married. Your father threatened me with a shotgun and said he'd have me thrown in jail for 50 years if I didn't marry you. Tomorrow I would've been a free man!"
