Last month, May 7th, NPWU members traveled to Basin, Wyoming to distribute some fishing rod kits to area kids. It was a nice day and we handed out about 220 kits.  This includes 40 kits we gave to the local Wyoming Game and Fish personnel to be given away in Worland at a G&F event held a bit later in the month.

On May 13th, we traveled to Douglas, Wyoming and handed out over 400 fishing kits to the entire student body of the Douglas Primary School.  We made sure to leave a few for the kids who were out sick or otherwise where unable to attend.  It was quite an event and was well orchestrated.  We received a very nice thank you note saying that we were very much appreciated for participating.

We also received a warm thank you from the Hanna, Wyoming area where we distributed over 110 fishing kits during the last two years.

This Saturday, June 4, we will be at Harry Yesness pond.  We could really use some volunteers to help hand out and rig up poles for the kids.  We will also be at Riverton, WY June 4 handing out some kids fishing kits and  could use a couple of volunteers for that event.  Call Jay Zastrow at 265-6877 if you would like to ride with him to Riverton. He has room for three helpers.  If you want to help at our Casper event, just show up before 8:00am.

On June  19th, we will be heading to Wright to attend their kids fishing day and distribute the last of our 1600 kids fishing kits we started the year with.  Our second order of 1000 kids fishing kits arrived last week so we are all set for the Wyoming Heritage Hunting and Fishing Expo held this September at the Casper Events Center.

Earlier this year we voted to finance a floating courtesy dock for Alcova up to $4000.  That dock has been purchased and should already be installed at Oakie Beach.  Depending  on how that one works out, we may be buying more for our area lakes.  Give it a try and  let us know what you think.

At each club meeting we have a drawing from the entire membership.  If that member is present they win a $100 gift certificate from Sportsman’s Warehouse.  If no winner, we add $10 to the pot for the next months meeting.  Last month’s “Lucky Loser” was Mitch Bauers.  This months drawing is up to $120.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has sponsored I believe 13 TV shows pertaining to kids in the great outdoors, hunting and fishing.  We were asked if we would  like to participate in that program and we said yes. Our segment will feature a local Casper girl, walleye fishing at Glendo Reservoir.  That segment is filming this week and we have a team down there at the moment. We have supplied all people involved, the guides, film crew, support staff with NPWU shirts and hats.
The show will air late this year or early next on one of the outdoor channels, we will let you know.
We have received a Commissioners Tag from Richard Klouda, a new commissioner representing the Fremont, Natrona, and Converse counties.  We have been fortunate in that Wyoming outfitters have contacted us regarding buying the previous tags.  We are hoping  someone contacts us soon regarding this one.  If not we will try to sell in online in some form.  I would like to thank Commissioner Klouda for this tag.  It is greatly appreciated and we will put the monies we get for  it to a good cause.

You might find this story a bit interesting.  As most of you know NPWU have been providing  Casper Fire/EMS Department with life jackets for their life jacket loaner program over the last 5/6 years with over $5000 worth of life jackets purchased.  Last week one of our members went to pick up a few jackets for the TV show filming at Glendo and was told this story.  It appears someone in Casper recently purchased a boat and found 10 of our life jackets in it.  He called the Fire/EMS dept and told him what he found and asked the dept to come and retrieve them, which they did. I guess it payed off to have them imprinted with the “property of/provided by” information.

Mercury and Freshwater Fish Study

A while back I came across an article that got my attention.  It came from the Wyoming Department of Health and was regarding mercury and freshwater fish.  I checked around and got a little information from various sources.  I still don’t have any real answers but I’ve found some interesting studies being done and proposed.

Long story short, it is recommended by the Wyoming Department of Health that women of childbearing age, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under 15 not eat fish high in Mercury.  Freshwater fish HIGH in mercury include, channel catfish, sauger, and walleye from Big Horn, Boysen, Seminoe, and Pathfinder reservoirs.  I don’t say this to be an alarmist.

There is some research out there that suggests there might be conditions where the presence of Selenium may somehow mitigate the effects the consumption of mercury in its various forms.  As it turns out our local waters are high in selenium.  I did some searching on the internet and discovered that I had a long time friend who works at one of the research centers, his area of expertise is computers and not this area of research, but he knows the researchers..  I contacted him and he sent me some links on the subject of mercury/selenium relationship.  I have included a link here for those who like more information on this subject.  I will have a research paper put on our website with more comprehensive information.  I think this subject needs a bit more study and perhaps we need to pursue this.  I’m curious what our members think about this.

This is the link: http://www.undeerc.org/homearticle.aspx?id=253  .   The part I found interesting was toward the bottom of the article regarding freshwater fish.

Tagging Study Needs Your Help

Wyoming Game and Fish will be posting the following sign at Alcova Reservoir in the near future. They are currently trying to catch walleyes in Alcova for this tagging study.  I understand it is not going as well as could be hoped.  It should improve as the water warms up.  Stay tuned.

Attention Anglers:

Please help us manage the Alcova walleye fishery.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is conducting a tagging study to learn more about this walleye fishery.

Your help is essential to the success of this study.
Please inspect all walleye for tags. Tags are blaze orange in color and are located directly behind the dorsal fin on the walleye’s back.

Please do the following if you catch a tagged walleye:
1)        Clip the tag from the fish
2)        Place the tag in a tag return envelope
3)        Fill in the information on the tag return envelope
4)        Place the envelope in a park fee drop box

Tag return envelopes will be available at fee booths or from Game and Fish personnel.
You can also mail the tags to the:

Casper Regional Office of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
Call 1-800-233-8544 (in-state toll free) or 307-473-3400

Watercraft and Equipment Inspection and Decontamination Training

Zebra and quagga mussels have been found in neighboring Colorado, Utah, and
Nebraska.
Invasive mussels, and other aquatic invasive species, spread quickly and can
be brought to Wyoming on trailered watercraft and equipment. This training will provide the skills
necessary to inspect, detect, contain, and decontaminate trailered watercraft that may be transporting zebra or quagga mussels into Wyoming.

In an effort to educate water resource managers and seasonal watercraft inspectors in Wyoming,
the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, is offering this watercraft inspection and decontamination training. This training is for state, federal, and local natural resource agency personnel who will be involved in watercraft inspections.

This training includes information on outreach and education programs, basic mussel biology,
distribution, transport vectors, and impacts. The focus is on how to inspect for and decontaminate
trailered watercraft that may be transporting zebra or quagga mussels. It includes classroom
instruction, a question and answer session, and a hands-on watercraft inspection exercise.
This training is free, but you must register with the Wyoming Game & Fish Department by May 1st. To register, send an email to: Sherril Rahe at Sherril.Rahe@wgf.state.wy.us. Please provide your name, title, address, phone number, and agency or business association. Limited to 20 people.

We received this from Nathan Cook, Fisheries Biologist, Wyoming Game and Fish Department:
I wanted to let you know about the AIS boat inspector training that the Game and Fish will be giving in June. The training is open to the public and is free. I am not sure if anyone with the walleye club might be interested in becoming an instructor, but we are trying to drum up some assistance from concerned members of the public.

Details are attached

And now for something completely different

“A mother was taking a shower when her 2 year old son came into the bathroom and wrapped himself in toilet paper. Although he made a mess, he looked adorable, so she ran for my camera and took a few shots. They came out so well that she had copies made and included one with each of their Christmas cards. Days later, a relative called about the picture, laughing hysterically, and suggesting that she take a closer look. Puzzled, the mother stared at the photo and was shocked to discover that in addition to her son, she had captured her reflection in the mirror wearing nothing but a camera!”

A policeman had a perfect hiding place to screen speeding drivers. But one day, everyone was under the speed limit, the officer investigated : a 9 year old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand-painted sign which said ”SPEED CAMERA AHEAD.”

A little more investigative work led the officer to the boy’s partner in crime, another boy about 200 meters beyond the speed camera with a sign reading ”TIPS” & a bucket at his feet full of coins.

Dispatcher: 911
Caller: Yeah, I’m having trouble breathing. I’m all out of breath. Darn....I think I’m going to pass out.
Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?
Caller: I’m at a pay phone. North and Foster.
Dispatcher: ! Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?
    Caller: No
Dispatcher: What were you doing before you started having trouble breathing?
    Caller: Running from the Police.

An old couple is in a taxi in America.  The taxi driver says ”So which part of England are you folks from?”  The old man replies ”From Yorkshire”  The old lady says ”What did he say?”  The old man says ”He asked which part of England we are from and I said Yorkshire”

The taxi driver says “I’ve been to Yorkshire once. I stayed with an old couple. The woman was horrible, a right bitch, it put me off going to England forever.”  The old lady says ”What did he say?”  The old man says ”I think the driver knows you!”
