Monthly meeting
7 p.m., Wednesday, March 2,
Game and Fish Building

Banquet tickets should be returned by Monday Feb 28. We need to know how many were sold so we can tell the Parkway. Sold and unsold tickets can be returned at Bullwinkles and Wyoming Discount Groceries. Or call Billy, John, Rick, or LaCinda with numbers so we can tally up the total. All money and tickets MUST be in by March 2 Club meeting.

White's Marine Center and Mercury Marine have graciously donated a 9.9 HP Mercury kicker motor to the NPWU club to be raffled off at the banquet. Only 100 tickets will be sold or given away with the ticket price at $20 each. Mercury raffle tickets will only be available at the banquet.

About last month's article....:

An article last month in this publication about the events center being anti-walleye and/or anti walleye fisherperson was a bit much, and some took offense. The truth is, the sports show wants to welcome ALL outdoor enthusiasts and a FEW flycasters don't like walleyes. And the flycasters don't use dryer lint, although to this untrained eye it was hard to tell the difference.

Our Toughman tourney is on, set for April 23rd. So get your order in now. Second place through last is still available as first place has been spoken for. Applications available at our next club meeting and at our banquet. Also available soon at Bulwinkles on the west side and Wyoming Discount Groceries on the east side.

Paul Bailey, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department fish biologist who worked with us on the tree planting at Goldeneye Reservoir, has quit and is now working for the North Dakota Game and Fish. As I understand it, that means we have one fish biologist currently in the Casper Office, as Paul Mavrakis, the first fish biologist to help planning with the tree planting, left to work in the Sheridan office. If we had any friends of the local walleye fishery in Casper's office of the Game and Fish, we have less now.

Last month I mentioned Navionic's high resolution underwater topo maps available now and thought it a good deal if a bit pricey. More research has shown that for the price of the maps in the western division, you get 540 maps. That comes to less than 37 cents per map. Seems almost cheap now. Should have a personal review soon.

Our first family outing for this year is for June 11th at Glendo. It will be held at the Sagebrush Shelter. We will have another family outing on July 30th at Pathfinder. These are instead of regular club meetings as it is hard to get members to meetings during the summer months. Mark your calendars.

Annual memberships are due again.....just a reminder

Annual banquet:

The second annual North Platte Walleye Club All you Can Eat Walleye Banquet is slated for March 5th., 2005 at the Parkway Plaza. Mark your calendars as this one will be bigger and better than our last one.

Our next meeting of the 2005 Banquet committee is 5:30 PM Jan 13 at the Sandbar Lounge. Come on down and help with the heavy lifting. Tickets for the 2005 Banquet will be available at the January club meeting. We will sell 400 tickets for this banquet and we intend to sell out early again this year, so plan ahead.

Fishing reports -- tips and tricks:

Nice Boat for Sale -- 1988 Lund 1850 Tyee, 150 HP Mariner, bow mount electric troller, 3 batts, 2 excellent covers, 2 downriggers, water skis, jackets etc. Always stored inside! Low hrs, Very good condition. $10,000 OBO. Call Bill Kearney at 358-6561. Leave message.

On Jan 4 of this year Priest Father Mariusz Zajac landed an 18.30 pound, 36.5 inch long walleye while ice fishing on Tobin Lake, Saskatchewan Canada.. The walleye shattered the provincial walleye record by .24 pounds and went on to set a world walleye record for ice fishing.

Zajac says he got "the nibble" which eventually led to the record walleye, while he was praying "The Magnifcat", also known as "The Canticle of Mary" (Luke 1:46-55) as part of The Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours -- the official prayer of the Roman Catholic Church. This creates interesting possibilities for expanding Wyoming fishing techniques.

He caught his trophy fish on a "diamond spinner" about one mile from the Resort Village of Tobin Lake. The fish had a girth of 22.5 inches and was pulled through a 10-inch hole bored in the ice.

Sam Faigle, owner of Bulwinkles Bait and Tackle store, would like me to remind all the members that he offers a 10% discount to all North Platte Walleyes Unlimited members to all items in the store. He has a list of all members names. He also will get anything you want in the Bass Pro Shops Catalogs at the same price listed in Bass Pro's catalog but with no shipping costs although not subject to the 10% discount. If you want something special he will get it for you.

Sometimes we just need to remember what The Rules of Life really are : You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Alcova is open water.......walleyes have been caught. Grayrocks is open water and walleyes have been caught. Glendo is mostly open water now. Jig and minnow with a slow retrieve is the preferred bait this time of year at first ice off at all the lakes.

Boat wiring:

Here are the standard wire colors used in the boating industry since the late 70s. When re-powering a boat with a newer motor or trouble shooting this is a handy reference. Most boats use these standards but always double check in case changes have been made!

BIA Wire Color------------------------------Where it is used
Black-------------------------------------------All Grounds
Black with Yellow stripe------------------Magneto/short to Kill
Gray--------------------------------------------Tachometer signal
Yellow with Black stripe------------------Choke
Red----------------------------------------------Unprotected(12V+)from battery
Red with Purple stripe--------------------Protected(+12V)from battery
Purple------------------------------------------(+12V)from ignition switch
Tan----------------------------------------------Overheat sensor to warning horn
Pink---------------------------------------------Sending unit to fuel guage
Yellow with Red stripe---------------------Ignition switch to starter solenoid
Yellow-------------------------------------------Charging stator to rectifier
Lt.Blue with White stripe----------------Trim up
Green with White stripe------------------Trim down

Some more standard wire colors used on many inboard boats, always double check though, as some vary or may have been changed along the way! Some standard colors for boats since 1980 are as follows:

· heavy red 10 guage (main battery)
· heavy black (main ground)
· purple (ignition)
· yellow (starter solonoid)
· grey (tachometer)
· brown (temperature)
· blue (oil pressure)
· brown with stripe (alarm)

Accesories:

· pink (fuel sending unit)
· yellow (blower)
· brown (bilge pump)
· grey (navigation lights)
· heavy green (bonding wire)
· red (misc electrical add-ons , vhf , depth finder, stereo, radar, power supplies)

Take a kid fishing day:

The North Platte Walleyes Unlimited club is currently working on a "Take a kid fishing day" where we will take as many as two to three hundred kids fishing in our boats. We are still working on the details at this time but hope to have it in July or August. Probably at Alcova. We hope to be able to give each kid a complete fishing outfit with rod and reel to keep. This will be a big event and would like to see some of our members who I haven't seen yet show up to help on this one.

On the light side:

Two hunters from New Jersey are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing. The other whips out his mobile phone and calls the emer-gency services. He gasps out to the operator: "My friend is dead. What can I do?"

The operator in a calm soothing voice says "Just take it easy. First let's make sure he's dead."

There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"
