Meeting is 7 p.m., May 7
at Wyoming Game and Fish in Casper

Our meetings are the first Thursday
of the month

At our last meeting, Paul Gerrity, fish biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish, gave a presentation on the walleye mortality at Glendo Reservoir. Because of the results of that study the Game and fish department was considering a regulation that would require the release of all walleyes under fifteen inches long. It would allow the fish to reach a larger size, and there would be more fish available at this larger size. They would like to hear feedback from the fishing public before the regulation is put into place.

As a side note, Paul Gerrity has transfered to the Lander office so the Casper office of the Wyoming Game and fish is short handed again. We would like to wish Paul well in his new location.

The toughman tournament has come and gone again. The weather was perfect, and the fishing great. So I was told. I was inside where it was warm. There was 39 teams which I believe is a record turn out. We gained 16 new members and only lost $268.47.

The results are:

Largest Walleye 7.55 lbs pd $891.36 to Team Ty Svejkovsky, Jimmy Brierly and Cameron Herriman
2nd Walleye 6.80 lbs pd $557.10 to Team Zeb Schauss, Steve Schauss, and Dan Genzler
3rd Walleye 4.55 lbs pd 334.26 to Team Mike Bailey, Don Kaufman, and Michael Bailey
4th Walleye 2.55 lbs pd 167.13 to Team Mike Homan and Tim Weinhandle

Largest Trout 5.5 lbs pd 389.97 to Team Mike Homan and Tim Weinhandle
2nd Trout 5.35 lbs pd 278.55 to Team Jay Zastrow, Jim Schuck, and Robert Orpet
3rd Trout 380 lbs pd 222.84 to Team John Green, Brandon Green, and Ken Mayer
Most non game fish 4 pd 55.71 Team Rick Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Doria Gilbert

I did receive an anonymous email complaining how the Toughman was officiated. It is unfortunate but an anonymous email carries absolutely no weight with us. We like to hear feedback from members but I will say that for the last five years there has been a standing rule that anyone who complains gets to run the Toughman the next year. It will only be for a year as I'm positive you will aggravate someone. So step up and I will give you the horn. And I will thank you very, very, very much. Problem solved. Now if I can just get someone to bitch about the newsletter.

We have the final numbers on this years NPWU "All You Can Eat" walleye banquet. We cleared $27,973.95 this year. If anybody has some suggestions on some projects we can pursue, drop in at one of our meetings and let us know.

We did get a grant from the Wyoming Game and Fish "Fish Wyoming" program for $7500 which we will match and purchase 1600 kids fishing poles, reels, and tackle kits. These we will give away at various events and to special kids projects as they become known to us. Half of the poles were ordered and received and are currently in our club trailer. The other half is on a boat racing through pirate infested waters to our shores and should arrive in a month or two.

Over the past three or four years the North Platte Walleyes Unlimited club has been a major sponsor of the Casper Fire/EMS lifejacket loan out program. It has not been without a few bumps and bruises but it seems to be smoothing out as the programs problems have been worked on. One of the major issues was the people who checked out the adult sized life jackets were reluctant to return them to the fire stations. We had the last batch of life jackets labeled with PROPERTY OF DONATED BY and that seemed to have helped the return problem.

The Casper Fire/EMS department is currently doing an inventory of all life jackets and will pull out the ones that need to be labeled so we can get that done this spring. The club does have one labeled life jacket in our trailer that we display at all the events we donate kids fishing poles.

I haven't received any fishing reports so I will give you my personal accounts. So far no walleyes have been caught. I hope to double my yearly take this year. So that makes my goal two.

From the exotichuntingandfisihingblog.com

This recipe will fill your freezer with walleye. This ultra-secret sauce is the result of a lot of testing and tweaking. It's a simple and easy ingredient mix to put together, and best of all it lets you catch walleyes fast.

The Recipe:

One Tablespoon Garlic Powder, One Teaspoon Ground Parsley, One Cup Vegetable Oil, 1/2 Teaspoon Salt. Mix the ingredients together in a small container. This recipe works best with live minnows. Dip the minnow into the sauce for one minute before throwing out your line. NOTE: The recipe will make the minnow extremely sluggish. And since the smell of it makes ME hungry, why would a walleye like it? It truly is a mystery as to why this secret recipe works - those of us who use it religiously only know that it does. Like so many things in walleye fishing, you can often be astonished at the level to which your success can skyrocket when you hit the water with a dramatically different approach than that taken by everybody else. Try it for yourself and see… Best of all, this bait recipe is simple to put together at the last minute before you head out the door to do some fishing. To catching the BIG ones. Fishing for Walleye can be challenging, and the bait can make the difference between a great day of fishing and going home without any Walleye to show for your effort. Commercial bait can be used, but the cost of using this type of bait can really add up, especially if you are an avid fisherman who fishes frequently. There is a cheaper solution, and that is homemade bait. There are many different bait recipes that can be followed, and almost every fisherman knows one or two recipes handed down to them from a more experienced sportsman.

Walleye eat smaller fish in their natural habitats, and a bait made from chopped up bait fish is a great enticement that you can make yourself before you head out to your fishing spot. Not all Walleye bait recipes contain other fish, some may be dough baits or made from other meats instead. There are three tried and true recipes that can really help you catch your limit of Walleye if the conditions are right. The next time you go fishing try bait you have made and see what results you get, you may be very pleasantly surprised.

Worm And Liver Bait:

24 night crawlers
½ pound of chicken livers, frozen (turkey livers may be substituted instead)
1 can of Copenhagen, finely cut
2 teaspoons garlic salt
Cotton balls, as needed
Flour, as needed
Cornmeal, as needed

Puree the night crawlers and liver until liquefied. Add this liquid and the Copenhagen in a bowl, stirring evenly. Mix in the garlic salt. Soak the cotton balls in the liquid, using enough cotton balls to soak up almost all the liquid. Add flour and cornmeal as needed until the dough resembles pizza crust dough. Use the cotton balls as bait, and this also keeps your bait from being stolen.

Blood Dough Bait:

1 cup blood, any type (acquired from a grocery store)
1 cup flour
¼ cup salt
1 tsp oil
1 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp cream of tartar

Add all the ingredients in a pan and stir thoroughly. Cook the mixture on medium until it is smooth, with no lumps. Cool the bait mixture. Knead this mixture until it firms up, then place in a container which is airtight. This bait can also be kept in the refrigerator, and it will last significantly longer if stored this way. Blood dough seems to work very well with Walleye fishing, and this bait can be made in large batches for future use, eliminating the need to make bait before every fishing adventure.

One last tip.....don't let the wife catch you using her blender making these baits. You have been warned.

Notable quotes and space fillers

Computers are unreliable, but humans are even more unreliable.

A paperless office has about as much chance as a paperless bathroom.

A printer consists of three main parts: the case, the jammed paper tray and the blinking red light.

Computers make very fast, very accurate mistakes.
