Meeting is 7 p.m., May 6
at the Game and Fish building
Our meetings are the first Thursday
of the month
The “toughman tournament” for this year has come and gone. Results are listed below. It got us 27 new members which puts us over 200.
At last month’s meeting we voted to put aside $500 for the purchase of life jackets (if needed) for the Casper Fire/EMS life jacket loan program. I think that has put us near $5000 worth of life jackets we have donated to the worthy program. We also voted to spend $7500 for the purchase of kids fishing poles to meet our 2010 projects. We did receive a matching grant from Wyoming Game and Fish so we should have plenty of kids fishing kits for this year.
Al Condor, Wyoming Game and Fish fisheries supervisor and crew came and gave us a rundown on the 2009 gill net surveys. All the data is too large to put here but will be available on our website. One point that was very interesting was the fact that the lake that has the highest percentage of walleyes over 25 inches of any lake in the US was our own Alcova Reservoir. So if your looking for a wall hanger, now you know where to look. Game and Fish was impressed (or bewildered) with the numbers of big fish caught in the gill nets.
Pathfinder is a reservoir that has been an improving fishery with the increase of lake levels. I would like to mention that there was warning 12-10-2007 about the mercury levels in Wyoming fish. Here is a quote from the Wyoming Department of Health website: “Eating fish with high amounts of mercury can cause health problems, especially in children,” said Timothy Ryan, environmental public health section chief with the Wyoming Department of Health.
“In general, Wyoming fish are low in mercury,” Ryan said. “But we are recommending that women of childbearing age, pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under the age of 15 should eat more small Wyoming-caught fish and fewer large fish, and should avoid eating channel catfish, bass, sauger and walleye from certain waters.” Freshwater fish high in mercury include: channel catfish, sauger, and walleye from Big Horn, Seminoe and Pathfinder reservoirs. I have a request into the health department to see if anything has changed since this report was published. The report can be viewed at www.health.wyo.gov .
Al Condor will be present at this months meeting to make a proposal to the club. I’m not sure of the specifics as he is still working on them.
At each meeting we have a drawing from entire membership. If that member is present they win a $100 gift
certificate from Sportsman’s Warehouse. We add $10 each month until we have a
winner. Last month’s lucky loser was new member Gary Hall. The May prize will be
worth $150.
A few years ago, NPWU made inquiries to Wyoming Game and Fish about the reintro-
duction of saugers into the North Platte River Drainage. A recent email to Game and
Fish from a club member received this reply: “My Department is working with Montana
to develop a source of sauger. The Lander and Cody regions are taking the lead. Once
source is available we plan on reintroducing into the North Platte. No ETA on
availability yet.”
John Green will be giving a presentation on Wyoming Spring fishing techniques at our
May meeting.
It was brought to my attention recently that there was article in the Platte County Record - Times of Wheatland, WY last febuary that states: $54 million modifications to Glendo Dam planned in case ’extreme flood event’ occurs. Here are some bits of that article: During an informational meeting Friday, Jan. 29 in Glendo, the Bureau of Reclamation stated modifications would be made on the Dam and Dikes to allow the Glendo Dam a greater capability of storing water on a temporary basis if what is known as a Probable Maximum Flood occurs. ”So we’ll have an additional three feet of reservoir elevation that would see water in the event we had this big, 100,000 year storm event,” Myler said. ”And then we’d have three foot of Parapet wall on the Dam so if there was wave action, it would protect from waves splashing over and causing erosion on the structure.”
Myler noted that three Dikes would be raised six feet. In addition, an auxiliary spillway would be constructed with a 540-foot ogee crest and crest elevation of 4,665 feet. According to the preliminary construction schedule, the bid for the Glendo Dam Modification Project would be awarded on Aug. 2. The construction would likely take two years to complete with project completion on June 21, 2012.
Myler stated the Glendo Park Road on the Dikes would be permanently relocated downstream. The complete article can be found at: http://www.pcrecordtimes.com/v2_news_articles.php?heading=0&page=72&story_id=1506
FYI:
At our April meeting our club treasurer stated we had a combined bank balance of approximately $45,000 and we still had a commissioners tag to sell. If you have any ideas on projects we could pursue, come to one of our monthly meetings and make a suggestion.
Toughman Tournament
On behalf of the board members of the NPWU, we want to thank the 33 fishing teams that particpated in the 2010 “Toughman Tournament.”
We also want to thank Mark, and the Alcova Lake Marina for co-hosting this event. A special thanks also for Sportman’s Warehouse for $100 worth of gift cards for door prizes.
The early morning temps were a little of the cool side, but warmed up to the lower 60’s. What a great day to be on the water. I would appreciate any “feedback” on how we can improve on the “toughman tournament” for 2011, or how you felt things went this year!!!
The results are as follows:
Heaviest walleye 6.95lbs Mike Bailey
2nd place 3.55lbs Brian Woodward
3rd place 2.35lbs John Green
4th place 2.05lbs Miles Bundy
Heaviest Trout 5.45lbs Robin Irwin
2nd place 5.35lbs Zeb Schauss
3rd place 4.95lbs Chuck McAuley
4th place 4.15lbs Steve Mundorf
The club paid out $2452.20 in prize money for the event. The club also gave away numerous clothing items, glass beer mugs, a fishing reel, and a couple dozen hats. Again I want to thank all of you helping out, getting this even together, and making it a great day, for all who participated.
- Jay Zastrow Toughman Tournament Director.
Fishing reports
Area lakes are still ice covered as this is written. My guess is that we will be able to put boats on Glendo and Alcova in the next few days.
Snowpack data for the upper North Platte Drainage looks good at over 90% of average. One more good snow fall south of Rawlins and a couple of closed interstate 80 should do it.
Seminoe Reservoir is at 68% of full pool and is starting to fill a bit. Pathfinder is at 72% full and should increase capacity for the next few months.
Calendar of events
May is National Hamburger Month
May 3rd is Lumpy Rug Day
May 4th is National Candied Orange Peel Day
May 7th is International Tuba Day
May 9th is Lost Sock Memorial Day
