UPCOMING CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Sept 8-9-10: Wyoming Heritage Expo, Casper Events Center
March 3, 2012: 2012 North Platte Walleyes Unlimited Banquet

Matt Euhler with the Wyoming Access Yes program will be giving us a short rundown on that program.  Wyoming Game and Fish Fishing Supervisor Al Condor will be dropping by, I think to get in on the great raffle program we have each month.  Brian Woodward will be giving a presentation on what methods, tips and tricks that should work in September.  Next month John Green will give out all his secret fishing spots and free tackle to all who show up.  I might be wrong on that last part.

Last month we voted to spend a little money to extend the ramp for the public courtesy dock NPWU purchased for Oakie Beach at Alcova Reservoir.  The public courtesy dock we purchased for Glendo didn’t work there so was moved it to Casper, members modified it quite a bit and it is now at Pathfinder.  The Pathfinder Boat Club is in charge of managing the dock.

Members also voted to allocate up to $10,000 to raise and widen the access road into Elkhorn boat launch at Glendo Reservoir to prevent it’s closure during high water..  Howard Ewart is negotiating that possibility with the parks department and should have some info for us at this months meeting.

At each meeting we have a drawing from the entire membership, if that member is present they win a $100 gift certificate from Sportsman Warehouse.  Last month George Overman was the winner.  The month before Brad Follensbee wasn’t.

On July 19th-21st, the NPWU attended the 2nd annual HARR SUMMIT, held in Dubois. Jay Zastrow and Buddie Dunn, attended this meeting on the clubs behalf. There were 26 people who attened this 3 day event. Topics that were discussed were how to recruit and retain youth in hunting and fishing. Mentoring programs were discussed, recruiting volunteers to take kids out, and some access problems as well. The club showed a 5 minute dvd, that showed clips from the Wyoming Call Of The Wild tv show we did on Glendo last summer. We also gave a brief outline on what the clubs activities with kids were this past year. We told them we handed out around 1600 poles and tackle boxes so far, in 6 different cities and purchased some more life jackets for the Casper Fire/EMS department for their life jacket loaner program.

We also gave away 18 door prizes,to those who were in attendance. The TV
show we had a chance to do, was one of the projects that came out of last
years summit! Buddie and I would like to thank the club for letting us
attend this meeting and sharing what the NPWU, has done this past year.

We sold our Commissioner’s tag we received from newly appointed Wyoming Game and Fish Commissioner Richard Klouda, a new commissioner representing the Fremont, Natrona, and Converse counties.  We were able to sell it for $5000 which will help us continue on with our projects.

New members Mike and Nancy Abel donated a really nice folding display board that will look great at our booth at the Wyoming Heritage Hunting and Fishing Expo at the Casper Events Center this month, September 8/9/10.  Members are working to build a stand and add the information designs and kids picture to the board.

Last month was the last day to add public comment to the new “twenty year master plan” for Pathfinder, Alcova, and Grey Reef fishing and camping areas.  Total cost as conceived was twenty million in today’s dollars.  Estimated revenue for the same period was six million.  Looks like they might have to cut a camp site or two.

Tagging Study Needs Your Help

Wyoming Game and Fish will be posting the following sign at Alcova Reservoir in the near future. They are currently trying to catch walleyes in Alcova for this tagging study.  I understand it is not going as well as could be hoped.  It should improve as the water warms up.  Stay tuned.

Attention Anglers:

Please help us manage the Alcova walleye fishery.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is conducting a tagging study to learn more about this walleye fishery.

Your help is essential to the success of this study.
Please inspect all walleye for tags. Tags are blaze orange in color and are located directly behind the dorsal fin on the walleye’s back.

Please do the following if you catch a tagged walleye:
1)        Clip the tag from the fish
2)        Place the tag in a tag return envelope
3)        Fill in the information on the tag return envelope
4)        Place the envelope in a park fee drop box

Tag return envelopes will be available at fee booths or from Game and Fish personnel.
You can also mail the tags to the:

Casper Regional Office of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
Call 1-800-233-8544 (in-state toll free) or 307-473-3400
for mailing information.

Aquatic Invasive Species Stickers

The 2011 AIS stickers are available online from the Wyoming Game and Fish web site and from the major retail licensing agents.  No zebra or quagga mussels were found in Wyoming last year.  They have been found in Colorado and Utah.

And now for something completely different

It’s Not What You Know

John Kallam graduated with a BA in criminology and entered the US Army. He served for 20 years beginning in the late 1930s. He was an investigator during the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals, and stayed in Germany for many years organising civilian police forces in the post-war era. He also wrote numerous books on criminal justice. He retired from military service in the late 1950s at the rank of full colonel.

Returning to Fresno, California, he began teaching criminology at what was then Fresno State College (later to become the California State University, Fresno). His work was well respected, but after about ten years of service, he was called to see the president of the college.

He was informed that he could no longer teach with just a bachelor’s degree. Times were changing, he was told, and the school demanded that faculty members hold a graduate degree. Merely having 20 years of distinguished experience was no longer considered sufficient qualification to teach. All new faculty were being required to hold a doctorate, it was explained, and the school was actually doing him a favour by letting him keep his job by getting ’only’ a master’s degree.

So John enrolled in a summer program at an out of state college. Three months of intensive seminars and then nine months of home study would get him his MA.

On the first day of class, the instructor was taking roll. He stopped when he read John’s name.

”Are you related to the John Kallam who wrote the textbook we’ll be using?” he asked.

”I am the John Kallam who wrote the textbook you’re using,” came the dry response.
In a loan company window:   ”Now you can borrow enough money to get completely out of debt.”
